Mary Anne Hobbs - Dubstep Warz Celebrating seven years since the original broadcast of Mary Anne Hobbs hugely influential ‘Dubstep Warz’.
Today marks seven years since the broadcast of Mary Anne Hobbs’s seminal ‘Dubstep Warz’ on BBC Radio One . A lot has been made about this show in the past, and it has been online for quite a few years now, but its significance in bringing dubstep out from its initial surroundings and into the wider world can’t be understated. Looking back on it, though, the main thing that sticks out is how remarkably new the music still sounds.
Hobbs herself wrote about the impact of the broadcast on her blog earlier today –
“The Godfathers of this generation, accidental icons, such as Kode 9, Mala and Loefah, have gone on to help inspire the most vibrant global electronic scene. So many different artists have channeled their spirit of invention and gone on to build fascinating new trajectories of their own.. Superstars like James Blake and Burial, and labels who nurture so many young producers, such as Hyperdub, Swamp 81, Deep Medi, Hessle Audio, Tempa, Hotflush, Tectonic, Night Slugs, Hemlock, Nmbers, Keysound, Apple Pips, Eglo, Ramp et al.”
