Black Jeans live at SXSW Ecstatically bleak theatrics from futuristic San Francisco producer/singer.
Black Jeans is the recording name of singer/producer Russell Butler from San Francisco. He’d flown into Austin, Texas, to play the Slow Pump house party show I attended on the Friday. Against local artist Scott Gelber’s awesome projected visuals, Butler appeared like some messenger from another world. His deep, bassy voice painted pictures of a bleak yet compelling future: ecstatic in its dark theatrics, drawing parallels with Light Asylum (live video here) and local Austin band Troller (live video here). My filming is a little iffy at points, especially when I get distracted by the cool patterns the fan was making with the projections, so also have a listen to Black Jean’s most recent release below. In Time in particular is a complete and utter jam.
